GeoNumerics today announced that Dr. Ismael Colomina, accepted the position of Chief Scientist, starting on March 1st, 2015.

Colomina was the Head of Geomatics of the Centre Tecnològic de Comunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC, Castelldefels, Spain) since the beginning of 2014. Prior to that, between 1998 and 2013, he was the Director of the Institute of Geomatics (IG) and the Head of Geodesy of the Institute of Cartography of Catalonia (ICC) where he worked from 1982 to 1998.

"I am proud to welcome such a creative and accomplished geomatician and mathematician to lead our scientific team," said Jaume Sastre, Chief Operations' Officer of GeoNumerics. "Ismael holds a record of original contributions to integrated geodesy, navigation and photogrammetry. He has been involved in many industrial-academic cooperative projects."

Colomina notes, "After a professional career of thirty-three years in public and academic institutions, it is high time to face the challenges of the market. I believe that beyond peer reviewing and citation counts, it is market acceptance that finally validates applied research concepts."

Dr. Colomina is an international expert in INS/GNSS navigation and post-mission trajectory determination for geodesy, photogrammetry and remote sensing applications. He is also an expert in sensor orientation and calibration. He belongs to the group of geomaticians that pioneered the use of unmanned aircraft in photogrammetry and remote sensing.

Since 1992, Colomina has served as chair and co-chair of ISPRS Working Groups (WGs) and currently of the WG III/I ""Sensor Modelling for Integrated Orientation and Navigation.” He also served as President of EuroSDR's Commission I “Sensors, primary data acquisition and georeferencing" from 2002 to 2006. He is a member of the editorial advisory boards of GPS World and of the Revista Brasileira de Cartografia. He is also a member of the Deutsche Geodätische Kommission (DGK) der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (BadW). He is the organizer of the EuroCOW series of biennial workshops.

Ismael Colomina received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Barcelona (UB, Barcelona, Spain). His dissertation focused on graph theory for graph numbering applied to hybrid geodetic and photogrammetric networks. He had previously earned a Licenciate (L, or BSc + MSc) degree on Mathematics also by the UB where his L thesis focused on chaotic solutions of functional dynamic systems. Both PhD and L thesis were supervised by Prof. Carles Simó (UB). He has been a visiting scientist at the Institut für Geodäsie und Photogrammetrie of the ETH (Zürich, Switzerland), at the Institut für Photogrammetrie of the Universität Stuttgart (Stuttgart, Germany), at the Department of Geomatics Engineering of the University of Calgary (Calgary, AB, Canada) and at the Laboratoire de topométrie (TOPO lab) of the EPFL (Lausanne, Switzerland).

GeoNumerics (Parc Mediterrani de la Tecnologia, Castelldefels, Spain) is a research and development (R&D) intensive, small-and-medium enterprise (SME) specialised in geomatics and accurate navigation. Learn more at www.geonumerics.com.
